Apple officially announced the Apple Watch Series 12 in September 2026.

Australian customers can pre-order the Apple Watch Series 12 now, with watches arriving in stores and becoming available from Friday, 18 September 2026.

The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at A$649 in Australia, with pricing varying depending on case material, size and whether you choose GPS or GPS + Cellular.

What's New With the Apple Watch Series 12?

This year, Apple has put a major focus on health.

The Apple Watch Series 12 introduces an all-new Health Sensing System, powered by Apple's new S11 chip.

According to Apple, the upgraded system delivers its most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable to date, while taking background heart rate readings as frequently as every five seconds. Heart rate variability, or HRV, can also be measured as often as every five minutes.

That additional data powers one of the biggest new Series 12 features: Readiness.

A New Readiness Score

Ever wake up and wonder whether today should be a workout day or a rest day?

Your Apple Watch might now have an answer.

The Apple Watch Series 12 introduces a new Readiness score, designed to give you an indication of your body's capacity to take on the day.

The score considers factors including your recent activity, sleep and health data before providing a score each morning. It can then adjust throughout the day as your activity changes.

For anyone already using their Apple Watch to track workouts, sleep and recovery, this could be one of the most useful upgrades in Series 12.

The S11 Chip and Apple Intelligence

Inside the Apple Watch Series 12 is Apple's new S11 chip.

Alongside powering the upgraded health sensors, the chip supports new Apple Intelligence features on the watch.

Siri AI brings more conversational interactions and personal context to Apple Watch, while new Audio Intelligence capabilities are also planned. Apple notes that some Audio Intelligence features will arrive in beta later in 2026 and feature availability can vary by language and region.

So while some of the Series 12's smartest features won't necessarily be available from day one, the watch is being positioned as much more than a fitness tracker.

Apple Watch Series 12 Sizes

The Apple Watch Series 12 comes in two case sizes:

• 42mm

• 46mm

These are the same two headline case sizes used for the previous generation, so you don't have to learn another completely new sizing system this year.

The 42mm model is designed to fit wrists from approximately 130mm to 200mm, while the 46mm model suits wrists from approximately 140mm to 245mm, according to Apple's specifications.

Will Your Old Apple Watch Bands Fit the Series 12?

Yes, compatible existing Apple Watch bands will still fit the Apple Watch Series 12.

Apple has retained its established band connector system. Apple's current 42mm bands list compatibility with 38mm, 40mm, 41mm and 42mm Apple Watch models, while its current 46mm bands work across the larger 44mm, 45mm, 46mm and 49mm family.

If you love warm jewellery, Light Gold is going to be incredibly easy to style.

Dark Bronze feels like one of the most interesting additions to this year's range.

A More Durable Display

The aluminium Apple Watch Series 12 also gets an upgrade to Ceramic Shield 2.

Apple says the new front glass is 60 per cent tougher than the Ion-X glass previously used on its aluminium Apple Watch models. Titanium and ceramic Series 12 models instead use sapphire front crystal.

Apple Watch Series 12 Battery Life

The Apple Watch Series 12 offers:

• Up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode

• Up to 12 hours of additional use from a 15-minute charge

The standard 24-hour battery life isn't a dramatic jump from Series 11, but faster top-ups should make fitting charging into your routine easier.

Can You Swim With the Apple Watch Series 12?

Yes.

The Apple Watch Series 12 has a WR 50M water-resistance rating and includes a depth gauge to six metres and a water temperature sensor.

Apple lists it as suitable for activities including swimming and snorkelling.

Just remember that your Apple Watch band also needs to be suitable for water.
